Custom Staircases
Custom Staircases. Fabricated in Galena. Installed Anywhere.
A custom staircase is one of the few things in a home that people notice every time they walk through the door. Galena Mill and Steel builds floating and spiral staircases in steel and hardwood, fabricated from scratch in Galena, IL. Every staircase is designed around the opening it has to fit, the materials you want to live with, and the look you are after.
We work in steel stringers and frames with wood or steel treads. Walnut and white oak are the most common tread materials. Handrail and railing systems are built as part of the same fabrication. For cable and glass railing systems, Galena Mill and Steel is a Viewrail certified installer. Every steel component is cut, welded, and fitted in the shop before it gets anywhere near your house.
Ryan McClain spent over a decade as a union ironworker before opening Galena Mill and Steel in 2022. Before that, a decade doing high-end trim work. That background covers both sides of a steel-and-wood staircase. Every staircase in this shop is built by the same hands that will install it.
We install locally in Galena, Dubuque, and the greater Midwest. For the right project, we travel and install anywhere in the contiguous US.

Floating Staircases
A floating staircase changes the feel of a room. Open risers, exposed stringers, clean lines that let light through and make a space feel bigger than it is. Galena Mill and Steel builds floating staircases in steel, wood, or a combination of both. Every tread and stringer is sized and detailed to your space, not pulled from a catalog. Steel frames are welded by hand in the shop. Wood treads are solid hardwood, fitted and finished before anything leaves. The result is a staircase built specifically for the space it lives in, and it shows.

Spiral Staircases
Spiral staircases are a precision build. The geometry has to be right or the whole thing is wrong, and there is no shortcut to getting it there. Galena Mill and Steel builds residential and commercial spirals in steel, hardwood, or both. From a compact basement access stair to a full architectural centerpiece in an open living space, every spiral starts with the actual dimensions of your space and gets built to fit them. Solid construction, clean welds, finished details. Nothing about it looks like an afterthought.
How It Works
1. The Call
Tell us what you have in mind. Opening size, style, materials, timeline. We ask the right questions to scope the project and give you a realistic idea of cost before anything else happens.
2. Site Visit
We come to you. Ryan measures the opening, assesses the structure, and looks at anything that affects the build. Ceiling height, wall attachment points, floor material. Nothing gets designed off a guess.
3. Design and Approval
You see drawings before fabrication starts. Dimensions, materials, finish, and railing style all confirmed in writing. If anything needs adjusting, we work through it before a single piece of steel is ordered. We do not touch steel until you have signed off.
4. Build and Install
The staircase is built in the shop in Galena, then installed by the same hands that fabricated it. Every component is cut, welded, and fitted before it leaves the building. We do not leave until it is level, solid, and finished right.
Start the Next Step
Every staircase starts with a conversation. Tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a quote.
