We work in steel and hardwood, including walnut and oak. We are also a Viewrail certified installer, so glass and cable railing systems are part of what we build too. Every project is custom. Nothing is built from a catalog or a standard kit. We take on both residential and commercial work, from a single staircase in a home renovation to a full office buildout. Railings and staircases at Galena Mill & Steel are built primarily in steel, including flat bar, square bar, and tube steel, along with solid hardwood such as walnut and oak for treads, handrails, and accents. For cable and glass systems, we install Viewrail products as a certified installer, which means stainless steel cable and tempered glass panels built to manufacturer specifications. Finishes include powder coating for steel, which holds up to daily use and weather, and sealed or oiled finishes for wood depending on the application. Material choice depends on the look you want and where the piece is going. A modern interior staircase might call for a black steel stringer and minimal hardware, while a traditional railing might use a heavier profile and a different finish approach. We will walk you through the options that fit your project during the design phase.

Galena Mill & Steel is based in Galena, IL, and most of our hands-on, regional work happens in Dubuque, Galena, East Dubuque, Madison, Davenport, and the greater Tri-State Midwest. That is where we do the bulk of our staircase and railing installations. Our reach is not limited to that area, though. For furniture and smaller pieces, we ship to all 48 contiguous states. For staircases, railings, and architectural work, we travel and install on-site anywhere in the U.S. for the right project, including completed work for clients in New York and Nevada, among them a full office desk buildout for a bank. Local and regional work anchors the shop, but national reach is real. If you are outside the Midwest and have a project in mind, distance on its own is not a reason to rule us out.

Yes. Commercial furniture is a real part of what we build, not an afterthought. We have completed a full office desk buildout for a bank, and we regularly work with businesses that want furniture built to their exact space rather than ordered from a catalog. For commercial clients, that includes desks, conference tables, reception pieces, shelving, and bar tops for hospitality spaces. The process is the same as residential work: a conversation about the space and how it will be used, a design phase with drawings or mockups, fabrication in steel and hardwood, and professional installation on-site. We work directly with the business making the decision rather than only through a general contractor, which keeps the process more direct and the final piece closer to what was actually asked for.
